I know lots of you have probably been having sleepless nights worrying if there would be a team championship this year  :P

In a bid to make it slightly closer, and less complicated (I'm aware no-one really knew how I worked it out - trust me, it was perfectly fair, otherwise Hollis Motorsport would have won it every year!) I have devised a new scoring system, loosely based on cross-country running  ??? (I'm sure it's used elsewhere but nothing springs to mind). I'll try and explain it below.

But first, please could I ask that anybody wanting to be in the team championship put forward a team name and their drivers, by either replying on this thread, emailing [email protected] or come and find me at Croft. Teams can have 2, 3 or 4 drivers (or 1 if you are very lonely). If you are new to the series or are not sure who you can start a team with, just let me know and I will try and match you up with an existing team.

So, this is how the scoring will work:

The top 10 teams at any meeting will score as follows: 20, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1

The teams will be ranked by how quickly any 2 of its drivers cross the finish line. So for instance, if Team X's drivers finish 1st and 2nd in a race, they will be the first team home and score 20 points. If however they finish 1st and 10th, but Team Y's drivers finish 3rd and 4th, then Team Y will be the first team home and score 20 points. So basically it's all about getting your drivers across the line in as high a position as possible. If only 1 of your drivers finishes, the team could still score points, but it would be behind all the teams that got 2 drivers home, even if the driver won the race. Simple!

The slight issue occurs as we normally have 2 races per meeting, and consequently a lot of drivers only compete in 1 race (so if Sparrow/Rundle have a team, they would be disadvantaged as only one driver would be in any given race - some would say this is completely fair because they are so quick, but it's not really!). So the only way I can make it fair for everybody, is to effectively combine the 2 races. Therefore there would 2 drivers in 1st, 2 in 2nd, 2 in 3rd and so on. If a driver competes in both races, then his or hers best result is taken for the purposes of the team result. So as an example, Hollis Motorsport from Oulton:

                  R1           R2           Best result
M Hollis       5th          5th           5th
R Hollis       11th        12th          11th
N Hollis       DNS        21st           21st

So M Hollis and R Hollis would count towards the team for this meeting, the amount the team scored will depend on how many other teams managed to get at least 2 of their drivers home in higher than 11th place (for instance, Sparrow/Rundle, if they have a team, got both their drivers home in 1st place, so they would definitely be ahead!).

Clear as mud yes! Please do get your entries to me asap, remember there is a lovely trophy up for grabs at the dinner/dance  :D

Undoubtedly clear as mud............. Mathematical geniuses step forward........ My personal choice would be an average for each team..... Team "x"  races 4 drivers in 2 cars all points added then divided by 4.....surely the best way......or did I miss the point?..........  ???

Unfortunately if you use an average score rule, the more drivers you have, the less likely you are to do well:

Team X: 4 driver team - finish 1st (100 points), 3rd (80), 4th (75) and 5th (70) = 81.25 average points
Team Y: 1 driver team - finishes 2nd (90 points) = 90 average points

Defeats the object of having a team!

Honestly, it's not that complicated, it just looks like it is when written down  :-\

Bas

Team "y"  one driver team...... That's not a team..... Minimum of two cars per team... And yes it's more difficult to win with more drivers but try harder!   ;)

Hi Matt can you do 22,55 & 77 as a team

Matthew Hollis

Hi Nick,

Which drivers? Those 3 cars include yourself, Mick, Katy, Lauren, Steve and Julie. How do you want to split it (you can obviously have more than one team)?

Nick clarke

I was thinking 1 team first 2 to finish from 3 in each race  ? Or Have
I missed the point ? Wouldn't be the first time lol

Matthew Hollis

Hi Nick,

Kind of! As some teams only have 2 drivers (in the same car), it would be unfair to treat each race as a stand alone result (i.e. a team might only have one driver in each race). Consequently the race results for each meeting will be combined, and if a driver appears in both then their better result is used.

In an ideal world I could base it on the result of the cars and not on the results of the drivers, but not all cars have the same drivers throughout the year, so you could potentially end up with a team of 12 or so drivers by the end of the year!!!

So I'm afraid I can't allow a team of 6 drivers. You can split it into 2 teams of 3, or one team of 2 and one of 4

Eh!
WTF?

That's why I've never bothered trying to explain how it works before! Believe me, it was even more complicated the way I used to do it. I have worked through various different scoring systems over the winter to try and find one that is as fair as possible. Long and short of it is, I just need the names of 2, 3 or 4 drivers to form a team, leave the rest to me.

Other option is, we stop people sharing cars......  :o  ;)

Matthew Hollis

Actually, sorry everyone, having mulled it over on the drive home, Nick is totally right. I think I am trying to be too fair, and therefore unnecessarily complicating it!  :-[ And seeing as Nick is the only person to have actually entered a team, it will be based on CARS rather than DRIVERS, I guess like a proper 'team' championship should be.

Still need to get 2 cars home in as high a position as possible, up to 4 cars per team, every race counts towards the total (no need to combine results that way), excluding the non-championship round.

Will do the usual and assume the rest of the teams, otherwise it would be Rosie against Hollis, and we wouldn't want to embarrass them  :-*

Good luck everyone..... (points tables to follow imminently)
