Buying a 2CV in France

Nothing to do with racing, I'm afraid, but can anyone advise on the procedure for buying a 2CV in France? Some say it's simple, others a nightmare...

Its easy! You buy a car and drive it home. You need to get a car with a contol technique if you are going to drive it.
Take it for a english MOT. Then you take it to a DVLA office were they take a look at. They give you a english age related plate then you go tax it. Easy!

If theres no docs then as long as you have a VIN plate it can be age dated... If you can get the all important "Carte Gris" (i.e. log book) from the French seller, it makes the process a lot smoother espcially if it's a pre-'73car, as this document shows the date the car was manufactured and registered. It's then easy to get age related registration... this is also commonly called the "certificat d'immatriculation"... If this is not available, then the minimum you need is a form from any french post office called "certificat de cession ou de vent d'un vehicule", usually the seller has one of these in my experiance... this document is proof of sale by the seller to you. It's best to do 2 copies as the seller has to show a copy to the local prefecture within 15 days of sale, to prove the sale and to relinquish him of any future liabilaty to that vehicule... it's important to have your own copy so that (for example) if your stopped by the french police for any reason either on route or at a ferry port, it proves you purchase and ownership (and they do stop you sometimes. ).After that back in the uk, you need M.O.T + French docs + Insurance certificate + Application to register a vehicule in the UK <comes in pack from local dvlo office + £38... send this all off and within 2weeks you recieve an age related number, usually followed by a new log and, if pre-'73, a yrs free road tax.
