Having made two trips to dave walkers at emerald cams this year along with pete sparrow we have been shown an alternative way of setting the cam timing other than setting it for full lift at a particular degrees .
Iwill try to explain.
You will need to fabricate some sort of mounting for a dial guage ,if you have a magnetic stand for your dial guage i found a piece of 3mm plate that is big enough to rest on the head nuts with a hole in to bolt the plate on utilising the rocker cover stud and at the same time allowing the rockers to pass underneath to be ideal.
   Set the engine to TDC
Set the dial guage to zero on the exhaust valve
Turn the engine clockwise until the dial guage stops moving
   Note the amount of lift
   Set the engine to TDC
Set the dial guge to zero on the inlet valve
Turn the engine anticlockwise until the dial guage stops moving
   Note the amount of lift
The amount of lift on both valves should be the same if it is not then adjust the cam and repeat the process until it is .
I'm not saying that this is the only way but has worked for us and has given different readings for full lift at on both my engines.
Hope its clearer than mud
