60 KPH is approx. 3000 to 3100 rpm in top, not sure about lower gears

Adam I think you are slightly off track with that one, when you visited us before croft your engine made the same power as ours both of which were 1 full bhp above the engine that was used martins sea lion car. unfortunately Pete still leaves us standing and drives off seemingly out powering us down the straights so the issue cant power but down to car set up and driver ability.  The main difference comes from higher corner speeds giving a better run on to the straight and being able to get on to the throttle earlier.

As for the costs really £2000 for a race engine is cheap, I have had years of experience building mini 1000 engines for Autograss class1. these are completely standard (no porting or any race parts) and prices are now in the region of £3500 for a completely standard mini 1000 engine. anything that uses race parts or ported heads start in the £4000+ range.

most of the problems that I have seen with 2cv engines generally fall In Three category's either driver error (over rev), lubrication problems or overheating.

The first is helped by using a rev limiter as many now do which at least helps with half of the over rev situations (if you fit one you will be surprised how many times you hit it). it wont help when the wrong gear is selected but that is the same whatever car you race.

As martin has stated in his earlier post using a good quality oil has a big improvement in the reliability I either use the Valvoline 10/60 vr1 or at least the Valvoline 10/40 Durablend semi synthetic. most of the high performance 0/30 or 0/40 full synthetic oils will be too thin and cause crank problems, cheap oils will cause piston/barrel problems if the engine gets too hot

The over heating problem is a more difficult thing to counter as it is generally caused by a broken fan or back plate don't really have a solution for these problems but the correct oil will help to minimise the damage caused.

I don't think there is an easy solution to this issue as every option has its good and bad points, I think that any major changes should have a decent trial before they are implemented. At the moment the sprint series is well supported and I think that we need to be careful that we don't harm that but we probably need to have a look at attracting more entries for the 24hr

After reading this I still struggle to understand how you can not be scored the points for the races that you enter ?? however the points system is worked then I still think that you should score the points that you achieve in the races that you race in regardless of which car you are in

if the rules are rules and need to be applied exactly as written then Pete should be awarded the 316 points that the two cars earned at Cadwell. as it is I think that common sense has been used and the points are correct.

The trouble is that no system is 100% reliable all that happens is that you exchange one set of faults for another so blocked jets will be exchanged for bad connections, troublesome fuel pumps, electrical interference & software crashes in reality if you are looking for 100% reliability then motorsport is not for you.

one of the things that appealed to me about 2cv racing was the single class (prior to economy class) so wherever you finish on track that is your race result not as in many series where they are split into several classes and nobody watching is quite sure who is racing who.

I can understand the idea and reasons behind the economy class but to start adding classes either with bike engines or an injected club+ class as far as I can see will only detract from the series and result in smaller entries

Unfortunatly all engines however carefully built to a spec vary in their fuel requirments, standard road cars have many sensors to measure, controll & adapt the fueling for standard production engines with adaption maps and millions of pounds of testing & development to get it all to work. i dont think we have the tecnology within the club to emulate that with old 2cv engines and a variety of engine builders.

Although fuel injection would probably suit me personaly I would say that any change like this should be very carefully considered as it will have significant impact on the series with many drivers not wanting the expence or complication of fuel injection.

As much as I quite like the idea of it I think the introduction of injection would be a bad move really as the idea of fixed maps etc. is generally flawed as the fuelling requirements vary a lot from engine to engine even if they are apparently the same spec. this would worse than us all having to run the same jets in the carbs regardless of the engine spec.

For them to run properly a full map would be required for each engine & the map would need to be swapped over when the engine is changed.

A fixed ignition map is possible but this would only save a tiny amount of the setup cost. I could write a suitable ignition map in about 5 mins based on the advance curve as used at the moment that would only require a couple of power runs to finalize

I think this would just increase costs for the majority of drivers and not really increase the reliability a great deal as the high pressure pumps are notorious for packing up if any dirt gets in to them requiring replacement not just a clean out.

I think that far from making things even it would spread thing out even further.

That said I have loads of experience with aftermarket EFI on race cars, road cars & kit cars so louis or Kris if you need any help then give me a shout & i will try and sort out any issues you are having

Races (not 24 hr) / Re: Pembrey Track Surface
July 09, 2014, 10:04:39
I did find that when I was with a pack of cars in the 2hr race the grip seemed to come and go in that I would make a few places and get towards the front of the pack then suddenly lose the places I had made and then be struggling to cling on to the back of the group only for a lap later for it all to come back together and I would start to make places again.

I put this down to the tyre temps getting hotter when I was in the pack and throwing the car around and sliding a bit then cooling off a bit when I was out of the pack and trying to drive smoothly and catch back up.

although I have possibly made this assumption as I have never had this problem before and we were trying the tyres with a bit more pressure than usual.    anyway that's my latest excuse made :)

Welcome and good luck  ;D I did the same last year (although i started with two nearly scrap road cars) and it was by far the best motorsport event i have ever entered !!  you cant beat it for value for money track time and friendly atmosphere. dont be afraid to ask any Questions in my experience  everyone is more than willing to help you out
