Advice for first-time racers

Your info says that you must have gloves & boots, are these mandatory?

The blue book section Q9 only states that competitors are strongly recomended to wear flame resistant gloves, socks balaclava and underwear. However, these are mandatory in International events (which the 24 hour race may be by being a NEAFP (National Event with Authorised Foreign Participation). Trainers or plastic soled shoes / boots are prohibited
On a personal note, there is NO WAY that I would even contemplate getting in to a racing car without the highest level of protective kit on that I could afford. Also, I would not want to try persuading a scrutineer that I didn't ave to have all the kit, cos they can be perculiar in their interpretation of the regs. I know, cos I have had a disagreement with them over dark visors before!!

Just been assessing the demon tweeks website, some products are FIA appoved, some have an ISO number for certain products, what is it exactly that im looking for on the Gloves, Boots, Fireproof underwear etc.. to stop the scrutineer from having me over the bonnet for a spanking?

The iso 6940 is the minimum requirement for boots, gloves, underwear and balaclavas. If you buy anything that is certified to that it will be ok. This was also known as the FIA 1986 Standard

The FIA in their wisdom decided a few years ago that fire was hotter in Switzerland and brought in the 8856-2000 standard for overalls. All new overalls are produced to this standard. A year or so ago they extended this new standard to boots, gloves and underwear.

The ISO / FIA 1986 standard is allowed for national events as per section Q of the blue book. The FIA 8856-2000 is the only allowed standard for international events.

Again, go for the best that you can afford

I'm very fond of going 'commando' but i too would recommend underwear when racing, best the keep the 'jewels' close to home as everything gets thrown around when hammering round the track.
(same goes for the girls of course before anyone pipes up)

I've just read my last post and realise it makes it sound the like girl racers have jewels like the boys, in most cases i don't think this is right.  :shock:
