a few tips on petes new motor, me and bully just fitted it for running in a bit more and i thought you might find these secret tips use full:
1:before filling with oil make sure sump plug is fitted or have plenty of saw dust at the ready.
2: leave os rocker cover loose, just in case you never lost enough new oil in step 1
3: to aid compression set the tappets on the ns at 5-10 mm leave nuts on adjusters loose, as i am sure there is power in varibile valve clearances
4: rev engine a few times to see if poping back though carb will clear and the knocking is just newness and a bit of back lash in the cam gear, saying to bully at all times it will go off in a minute.
5: remove the n/s rocker cover which was correctly fitted and dose not leak, as a non leaking rocker cover shows weakness, remove to rectify  idea in 3

hope these tips help

geoff

ps before bully jumps in yes i built it alone

before fitting engine;

1. rob flywheel and fit.
2. dig scabby clutch out of box of crap in the back of workshop and fit
3. remember to fit points box (yes its on Points & condensor) before fitting fan
4. check carb nuts are tight on manifold that has yet to be fitted
5. Rob alternator and fit
6. check carb spindles dont have 5mm of play allowing massive air leak.  If this is the case fit huge idle jet, and wind out idle mix screw 8 turns. should just about run.  Try gobbing loads of grease all over the carb??

After carb tuning mentioned above, when running in on the road, don't expect engine to be running when you want a quick getaway from the traffic lights.

PS geoff, i think the tea maker built it alone.

dont forget to put wires on to oil press warning light and more importantly the wire to the points box aids starting.

If you dont have one, rob it.

in me defence, the spindles are ment to be like that, how else can i use a 41 idle jet, needs to be used

Is this what they call "dry sump" geoff.

Geoff Archer

your right paul, some one on my wave length, no oil in sump = no drag on crank webs, no drag due to high oil presure and oil level is not mentioned in regs, so just need to make the motor last

Geoff
If its not in the regs, you can't do it!!!!

Some days, it's REALLY difficult being me!

Geoff Archer

try rebuilding an engine late at night to the point you don't know how to use a spanner.  Tighten down head without checking position of pushrods.  Rotate engine several times and hope the horrible clicking noise will go away of its own accord.  Realise mistake and find push rod is now jammed past the rocker and can't be got out without a good deal of rage.  Discover that rage has now bent rocker and the whole f**king thing has to come off.  Return to bed and beat up nearest object who retaliates ++ and stomps off to the spare room......

glad to see people are investigating further top tips,
long long time ago i remember fitting a crank at knockhill while a bit pissed fitting the matched heads, barrels and pistons the wrong way didnot relise until i went to fit the oil pipes!! bugger start again, they were matched cos then in 99 you ran engines with ................................

Catherine incorrect, quick tip read regs 3 times do wht the regs say to the letter, never work to the spirit, cos a spirit never won a race oh forgot avoid people with repeated bad luck before a big race as it could rub off!!
